Online Commenting Etiquette

When it comes to commenting and/or posting on social media, there are a few unspoken do’s and don’t’s that someone should always follow. The following list contains five examples of each.

Do’s

1. Be polite when addressing others. Social media has been used as a platform for debate. Remember, whoever        starts name calling has lost.

2.  Bring into account other people and other situations/life styles when posting.

3.  Make sure that spelling, grammar, and phrasing of your posts are top notch.

4. Always put into account that whatever you post cannot be completely erased. Take pride in your online identity.

5. Read your post back to yourself before posting, make sure it is appropriate for your audience.

Don’ts

1. Don’t publicly humiliate people. No good can be reaped.

2. Personal information should never be shown when posting on a website, and that goes for any kind.

3. Don’t bring personal issues onto a public platform. There’s a reason its “public” and not “private”.

4. If you are ever doubt that you’re post is appropriate, don’t take the chance. DO NOT post.

5. Don’t ever purposely try to hurt someone online. Not only can it take a toll on the person, it can take a toll on how you view yourself.

Follow these Do’s and Don’ts when you’re online, and you will always stay out of cyber trouble.
